It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is upon us. Yet we still have over a month and many events happening at TPA. Please see calendar links for both May and June. Also enclosed is the school calendar for the 2015-2016 school year. Our school hours for the 2015-2016 school year are scheduled to be 8:05 – 1:20 Mondays, and 8:05-3:20 Tuesdays –Fridays. Additionally, we are scheduled to get two small bus services to ease traffic flow. More to come on those plans from our TPA Board.
As you know, we have a great curriculum with Core Knowledge, Singapore Math, and our Leader in Me. For those of you in the EOG testing grade-levels, please help them at home prepare by putting their minds at ease. Students need to be emotionally prepared, as well as academically prepared, so this is the time to focus on the whole child. The best tip I can give you as a mom is to concentrate on removing the stress and worry, and building their confidence level. As parents, we can only provide the best possibility to help our child showcase their knowledge on formalized tests. It is similar to helping a child learn to ride a bicycle. We do the prep work with them, and then it is up to them to ride their bike without training wheels.The biggest message we can pass on to our kids is to never give up despite any outcome.
I want to take a moment to give my heartfelt appreciation to our PTO and ALL our parent groups. Back in the fall when Wendy Labar and I had our first interest meeting for families at HARP, over 80 parents participated wanting to be part of PTO, SLT, Room Moms and Volunteers. I remember having to break everyone into groups as we had such a turnout of very skilled parents! In just a little over 6 months, I am amazed by the phenomenal impact each group has had. TPA is not only a school, together we have built a community filled with wonderful connections and relationships. TPA has definitely impacted the Lake Norman area.
As I reflect back to our parent meetings last spring and summer, I remember the promise that I held to in providing great teachers and a great education. Having been a pioneer before, I knew that I needed to remain focused and dedicated to that promise no matter what would transpire. I am so proud of how our students have blossomed at our school, and I look forward to seeing them continue to shine in the years to come with us. None of us could have predicted the challenges we would encounter as a large first year charter, nor could we have predicted the many surprises that occurred along the way. And yet through it all, we have persevered!
Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for supporting me, our leadership, our school, and our mission. Although we provided a great team of educators, our school wouldn’t have been so extraordinary without our amazing families and students! Patty Moreira

EOG Pep Rally
The entire school will cheer on our 3rd and 4th grade students as they participate in the Thunder Run. K-2 students are invited to make signs or posters to suppport those testing the following week.
Thunder Run is a 10 lap run for all students, which is a school wide fundraiser that is similar to the Boosterthon at CMS.
Mini Field Day
This a five event field day being organized by our own Coach Collins. Classes in each grade level will rotate between field day and fun run.
Parents are invited to attend Thunder Run. Please make posters to support your child's entire class. The children love it when their parents cheer them on. Please try to make this day a priority if possible. Hope to see all of you! The schedule is below:

LADIES NIGHT OUT
Our Ladies Night Out in April was a great way to meet new friends and enjoy a delicious dinner out. The next Ladies Night Out will be on May 7th:
7:00pm at Killington's Restaurant & Pub, 10010 Rose Commons Dr., Huntersville
$35 includes appetizer, soup/salad, entree, dessert and non-alcoholic beverages. A cash bar will be available. Bring cash to the event for a chance to win raffle prizes as well!
This invite is open to all ladies of TPA- moms, grandmas, teachers, staff, etc. Please use the SignUp Genius Link to sign up for the May event.

We're finishing out the year with some wonderful activities and events!
The days are getting longer and summer is quickly approaching! We have enjoyed the wonderful activities this spring and look forward to some fun and exciting events in May and June. Teacher appreciation week activities will be occurring this week, as a celebration of our outstanding teachers, with themed days with cultural food and activities. The upcoming Fun Run and Pep Rally on May 22nd and Music and Orchestra performances on May 14th will be great events for our children to participate in and show their school spirit. The Ladies Night Out in April was a nice way to meet and chat with women in our TPA family. There will be another Ladies Night Out on May 7th, and we look forward to a great evening of fun and friendship.
Our task force groups have been meeting and working towards school enhancements and ideas for the 2015-2016 school year. Our general PTO meeting will be held from 6:45 - 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 14th, in conjunction with the spring choral concert.

Our four fabulous Specials Teachers are great leaders and we interviewed them to find out some interesting facts:
What is your favorite part about teaching at TPA? Coach C - Building relationships with TPA students, teaching new skills and games, and providing opportunities for growth. I enjoy seeing students challenge themselves and reach a new level of confidence, as well as succeed and feel good about that experience! Ms. Angel - My favorite part of teaching is to see the glow on student’s faces when they accomplished even smallest task. I love to assist children with lower understanding of the subject in gaining confidence and improving their academic performance. Ms. Miller - BY FAR, my favorite part about working at TPA has been my wonderful specials team: Meredith, Juliana and Eric. We have a really strong friendship between the 4 of us, and it has been a pleasure and joy to work alongside them this year. I also love the amount of creativity I get to see in my art students week after week. They make this job worth while! Ms. Swanson - TPA has awesome students! The kids here are so sweet, full of joy and have a wonderful spirit. One of the best parts of my day is greeting the kids in the morning at carline!
What is your favorite activity to do with the kids? Coach C -Playing the game called “Battleship” and “Dodgeball Handball”. Ms. Angel - I love to play all different types of games with the kids in class. Through games children develop important values of self control, social skills, knowledge of the subject and teamwork. Ms. Miller - I love anything involving paint!!! Whether it's acrylic landscapes in the 4th grade, or painted snow owls with Kindergarten, any kind of painting project is always my favorite activity. I think my students all love it as much as I do, which is wonderful! Ms. Swanson -I love teaching the students new songs. Hearing them sing is one of the best sounds in the world, especially during the holidays! It is so sweet when music fills our school.
Please share something about yourself that TPA families may not know. Coach C -I am a big fan of the “Star Wars” movies. I can’t wait for the new movie “Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens”. Ms. Angel - I like to travel and discover the similarities and differences about places, people and culture around the world. Ms. Miller - I'm an old soul: I spend my time watching movies from the 1930's and 40's, and listening to music from that era. My first CD that I ever bought was Frank Sinatra's "Capitol Years" in 6th grade and my favorite movies usually involve Jimmy Stewart or Doris Day. If you don't know either of those people- look them up! They're amazing. :) Ms. Swanson -I don't eat vegetables, or many fruits. But I do run 3 miles in my neighborhood at 5:30am every morning!!
What are your wishes for the kids this summer? Coach C -The summer months is one of the best times to get fit and stay healthy as a family. Take advantage of the summer months to be active, eat healthy, and take care of yourself and your family’s health and fitness. Ms. Angel - I hope this summer the kids at TPA can practice leadership at home and their community by working on the Leader in Me principles they learned through the school year. Ms. Miller - If I could give some advice to my students over the summer, I would say, "Continue working on your art skills! Take a painting class; go outside and draw when you're vacationing at the beach or in the mountains; buy some air-dry clay and create a sculpture! Art is just like anything else: to get better, you MUST practice! SO while on summer break, I want you to practice art! You will be amazed at how much you will accomplish before next year!" Ms. Swanson -I hope this summer that you take trips, play with friends, read a good book and dance to some great music. But most of all HAVE FUN! That's what summer is all about! Oh, and if you see me in the grocery store come up and say Hi to me!
Partner With Us
Dear TPA families, The Thunderbird Prep PTO is developing a corporate sponsorship program that will create a partnership between our local community and our school. We believe this can be a win-win for our school, students and businesses. We would first like to identify TPA parents that are personally involved with businesses that may be willing to partner with our school. Some examples of needs we may have throughout the school year are gift cards to use as prizes for events, photography, landscaping, food/supplies for events, school materials, building supplies, a location to host an event or program, and much more. We would love to call on the interests, talents and strengths of our parents before we look elsewhere. The PTO will also be creating a direct sponsorship program in the near future. This program will offer the opportunity for businesses to sponsor a specific program, event or curriculum need. In exchange, the business would receive promotional pieces such a newsletter advertising, acknowledgement at the event when applicable and signage at the school or at an event. We will need sponsors for our Spring 5K and fun run, in particular. Please let us know how you would like to get involved!
