Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our returning ones! We also wish to extend a warm welcome to our new Interim Managing Director, Mrs. McKinney, and all of our new and returning teachers and staff. We are appreciative and grateful for each and every one of you!
A new school year brings both anticipation and excitement, and we have much to be excited about this new year. For those of you that may not know, the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) is a group of volunteers who work on a variety of projects, events and fundraisers on behalf of our school. Membership forms are available on the website and at school events. We welcome you to join us! This is going to be a great year, and we are proud to support Thunderbird Preparatory Academy.
There are numerous ways to get involved and/or volunteer and we need your help. Many volunteers remained active over the summer and worked hard to help prepare for the start of school. Thank you to each and every one who volunteered in so many ways! Over the summer we worked in conjunction with the TPA Board of Directors to purchase a playground, soccer goal and two basketball goals. The funds for these playground purchases were raised by our amazing students at our inaugural Thunder Run in May. Thank you to all the students and families who made this a reality for our school.
In addition to the playground, this summer the PTO purchased a die cut machine, a moveable horizontal 8 roll paper rack, welcome items for our new families, and hosted a welcome back luncheon for the staff. Our attention now turns to technology and other needs for the 2015/2016 school year. Our annual giving campaign will launch in September, and fundraising and community events are already on the calendar. Please stay tuned for more details.
This newsletter is published monthly and our events are reflected on the school calendar. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month with the first being held on Tuesday, September 8th at 6:30 p.m. We look forward to a great school year!

About the Second Flight Uniform Sale:
The PTO's Second Flight bin is in the lobby! Please donate your gently used school clothes. This can be TPA logo shirts and outerwear, navy and khaki pants/shorts/skirts, and spirit wear. A sale will be held at least twice per year, with the proceeds going to benefit our school! When you donate, add your name on the clipboard attached to the bin. Sign up to join us at Dressler's Restaurant in Birkdale Village for a Ladies Night Out or Ladies Luncheon to benefit the PTO! Moms who are new to TPA this year are invited to arrive 30 minutes early for a special Meet & Mingle hosted by the PTO Welcome Committee.Deadline to register and make a payment on the school's website is 9/17. You must pay to reserve your spot. For $40 per person, you will have your choice of a garden or ceasar salad, one of four entrees, key lime pie or chocolate cake, and non-alcoholic beverages. The BooHoo Breakfast for Kindergarten Parents was wonderful!!
A super huge thanks goes out to Jay Goldstein, whose daughter, Pickles, attends TPA. He worked on the playground installation all day, including mulch, fixed the fence, assembled butcher paper roll system, dumped shipping material and assembled a die cut machine for us. We are eternally grateful for Jay's help and all the volunteers the past two weeks.
A funny quote from Jay, "I have mulch in places mulch shouldn't be..." He was our brave leader in guiding the mulch down to the playground area from the semi truck.
HOT LUNCH ORDERING
Orders for our two vendors, Mama's Pizza in Cornelius and Honey Baked Ham will be placed for one month at a time. Visit our Hot Lunch web page for ordering details (under the "Our School" tab) on TPA's website.
ROOM PARENT SIGN-UP will be handled through your child's teacher. Many teachers had a sign-up sheet during last week's open house and others will have sign-ups available during curriculum night. If not, please contact your teacher directly to volunteer. Once teachers finalize their list we will have an overview/information session with room parents where we can share ideas and collaborate. Room parents will also receive approved documents for their class. We are hoping to have the meeting the week of September 21. More details to follow in the upcoming weeks.
Meet Chris Vincent, our Facilities Manager. He helps us maintain a safe and healthy environment for our kids at TPA.
1 – What is your job at TPA and briefly summarize what you do or what a typical day is like for you at the school.
I take care of everything not related to curriculum. I make sure the building is clean, inventory all of the stuff the school owns, smash bugs for the little kids if they see them, and support the staff with their building maintenance needs. I fix anything that breaks, and I am also in charge of making sure that all of our construction needs are complete.I do everything and anything to make sure that our wonderful teachers can focus on everyone's children. I also make sure that the kids and staff are kept safe at all times. And last but not least I handle the traffic flow for the school. I think of myself as the oil for a well-oiled machine.
2 – What’s your favorite aspect of your job?
My favorite aspect of my job is everything I do. This isn't a job to me this is more of a passion. I love interaction with all the kids and parents and staff. I just completely love every part of what I do. To me everyone at TPA is like family.
3 – Please list car line tips or advice for parents.
TIPS: Remember that there are two lanes of traffic for entering the school. If you enter in the left lane, be sure to swing wide so the traffic on the right has room to enter beside you. Also, tailgating is very helpful for us because it will maximize the amount of cars we can get in the parking lot. Also NO CELL PHONES. If drivers are distracted with them it causes delays, and we don't need any more of those.
ADVICE: Last, but not least, PLEASE PLEASE pay attention when entering and exiting the lot. I am doing my best to keep
the traffic smooth on Will Knox Road. Please keep your eyes on me and do not pull out on your own. I am there directing traffic for a reason, not just because I think that it's something fun to do.
4 – Favorite flavor of ice cream, favorite sports team and favorite fall activity or event.
My favorite Ice cream has got to be vanilla moose tracks, and my hobbies include carpentry, and hunting. I am all about the outdoors. I like to hike and fish and pretty much anything to keep me outside and off the couch. My favorite sports teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Boston Red Sox.
We are collecting Keurig k-cups the week of 9/8-9/11 to stock the teachers lounge. There will be baskets in the car line and front office to collect. Please consider donating your favorite coffee or tea as a treat for our fabulous teachers and staff.
